Gold Again!

I was walking back to the IBC after spending the morning at Granville Island and English Bay, when I discovered the local CTV studio in the middle of Robson St.

I stopped to watch just in time to see Christine Nesbitt win Canada's third gold medal of these games in the Women's 1000m Speed Skating event with an incredibly gutsy finish after a poor start.  She won this event by .02 seconds, while Christina Groves narrowly missed a bronze medal, finishing 4th.

The atmosphere on Robson is vibrant.  There are street performers everywhere, and thousands of people walking around taking in the sights and sounds.  Here's a short video that captures some of the vibe...

Christine's medal was our 7th of the games following a surprise silver medal in Women's 500m Short Track by Marianne St. Gelais yesterday.  Marianne raced on a brand new set of skate blades that she had tried for the first time that day!

Back on Robson, it seems the competition has moved from the games to the streets...

Meanwhile, tonight, Evan Lysacek had a terrific Free Skate to defeat Evgeni Plushenko in Men's Figure Skating.  Patrick Chan skated well, but fell on his second triple axel, and just had too much ground to make up to afford any mistakes.  He did manage to move up to 5th place from 7th.  I also saw that Lori Nichol switched jackets at least three more times tonight!  She was wearing her Canada jacket when Evan found out he had won the gold, but quickly switched into the USA jacket before the medal presentation.

Canada's medal pace is even slower than originally predicted and Canadian officials are now conceding that it may be difficult for us finish atop the medal standings.
