Tragic News

Tragedy has struck before the games have even begun.  This morning, a 21 year-old Georgian luger named Nodar Kumaritashvili died after crashing at more than 88mph during a training run at the Whistler Sliding Centre.  The Whistler course is the fastest in the world, and has the highest vertical drop (over 150m), and there have been safety concerns raised over the past few months.  IOC President Jacques Rogge has said the death "clearly casts a shadow over these games."

Practice runs at the course have been halted until further notice while teams, coaches, and officials discuss safety concerns.

Very sad...

Update:  The Georgian team has decided to march in the Opening Ceremonies, and to compete at the Games, in support of their teammate.  The IOC has decided to dedicate the Opening Ceremonies to Nodar Kumaritashvili and the Canadian and Olympic flags will fly at half mast.

  1. It was very touching seeing the Geogrian team march in with the black ribbon on their flag and black arm bands.

My thoughts and prayers are with them.
